Natalie Tan was born in 1975 in Singapore, educated at the National University of Singapore and received a Masters in Architecture in 2000. She has an international exposure as an architect and has worked at offices in Singapore, Los Angeles and Toronto. She is licensed to practise in the state of New York, USA and the province of Ontario, Canada. Her experience is in educational projects of varying size and program, including K-12 schools, university buildings and laboratories.

Since beginning her career as an architect, she has won an international design competition for a temporary pavilion in Québec and collaborated with local architect Daniel Karpinski for a poster presentation at the UIA XXI World Congress of Architecture in Berlin. She also joined the Institute of Building Technology & Safety to provide temporary housing assistance for Katrina Disaster Recovery Efforts for FEMA in Louisiana.

She started FRSHR Atelier in 2001 as a site for collaborations on multiple media events and cross-disciplinary competitions. This has evolved into disaster relief efforts, writing, and the pursuit for a responsible built environment. The acronymn *frshr*, which stands for "fraction of urban rush hour traffic" of unimpaired radioactive shipment, could otherwise describe the condition of the contemporary environment and its infrastructure. It could also mean "fresh air" - an ecological condition where the vowels have been removed and the phrase becomes unpronounceable.
